Martin Margiela'S public resurrection as an artist
It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard anything of former fashion designer Martin Margiela since he left the fashion world by storm. He shook the world of fashion by retiring from his eponymous label in 2009 after having made a groundbreaking impact on the world of fashion, still visible in today’s designs.
Margiela never made it any secret that he was intrigued by art as much as keeping his identity a secret (he had some pretty good reasons for doing this). To make a semi-long story short, he preferred to let the clothes that he designed, speak for itself in a way.
THE EXHIBITION
By opening an exhibition located at ‘the Lafayette Anticipations Gallery’ in Paris, he’s still maintaining this way of presenting his body of art, by letting the art speak for itself. Named ‘Martin Margiela’ the exhibition will open its doors on the 15th of April 2021 until the 25th of July 2021. The exhibition will feature photographs, installations and sculptures, all previously unseen by the public.
The gallery stated: “This exhibition celebrates the idea that Martin Margiela has always been an artist, whose work has played out since, within and outside the art world,”
Although no one (except maybe his close friends) know what he looks like, we are still all triggered by the fact that his appearance is unknown. He’s an enigma, much like a myth, who enjoyed being outside of the spotlights. For those who’ve seen the recent documentary ‘Margiela in his own words’, why did we ever think we were going to see his face?
Margiela is following the same path as none other than the Austrian former fashion designer Helmut Lang who has been studying art as a form since his departure from the fashion world. Though, recently Lang teamed up with Anthony Vaccarello, current creative director of Saint Laurent. I’ll keep on dreaming for a new Margiela chapter in the fashion industry…..
